The Side by Side Restaurant

About

  • 4.4 ( 5 reviews)

A CONTEMPORARY TUSCALOOSA RESTAURANT The Side By Side is a contemporary, high-energy restaurant created by Chef Chris Hastings, winner of the 2012 James Beard Award, chef and co-owners of Hot and Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, Alabama. The name is partially based around his old and beloved 28-gauge shotgun, a side-by-side. "I've always been an avid outdoors man, a hunter and fisherman, all my life," he said. While searching for a name, Hastings was asked: What will tie this restaurant to you? "But it's also about the restaurant being attached, side-by-side with the hotel, and people sitting down together. ... There are a lot of metaphorical opportunities there." And it's just The Side By Side. The restaurant takes a modern approach to blending French, Southern, and California-styles of cooking within the context of the Deep South. Our southern hospitality permeates the staff and dining experience as well.

Went here on a Tuesday night with a gal pal for some drinks and dessert. Our server was very kind, helpful, and educated! We ordered two glasses of red wine, the souffle, the apple pie, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Best place in town to go for a sweet, relaxing evening. We'll definitely be returning!

My rating is based on cost/value. I went there with my girlfriend for Valentines. They had a four course layout with 3 or 4 options for each course. The choice were excellent if you aren't a vegetarian, which my girlfriend is a sort of vegetarian. She loves salmon, so we enquired about the hash that came with it. The waitor checked with the kitchen and reported there was no meat. Wrong... Had sausage. So, someone there doesn't take dietary restrictions or preferences seriously. That said, she said the salmon was fantastic and my steak was perfect! The leek and potato soup was excellent. The wedge salad was so-so. And both our desserts were very tasty.

First visit to this establishment. Although recommended by friends, was skeptical because most Embassy Suites restaurants are "cookie cutter" types. Was I wrong! Very nice decor, promptly seated and attended to by a very nice server (sorry didn't get name). Menu, although limited, would appeal to most everyone. Generous martini, one of the best Caesar Salads I've had in a while (very chilled) and great main courses of grouper and salmon. Only minus was the autistics; slightly loud (live piano). Will return to try out the rest of the menu.
